| International Wolf Center |
|
| With a mix of history, lore and educational activity, the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN combines an existing 3400 SF US Customs Forest Building with an array of new spaces. Interior and exterior wolf exhibits, a museum store, media rooms, and a plaza/amphitheater spaces are assembled along a linear sun-lit canopy like corridor. Wolf ear skylights and windows emulating wolf heads in a pack (see sketches) beckon users through. Intriguing combinations of triangulated windows add to a Native American theme indigenous in these parts. Having ‘devoured’ all of Jack London's’ books as a child, wolf lore dominated Brummel’s upbringing. Thus, to be design and project architect for this 21000 SF facility while with his previous firm, he indicates personally a ‘career pinnacle’ was obtained. As initial permit authorization point for all Boundary Waters’ enthusiasts, this building was sustainable long before its time. |
